With more people trying to sell items door to door from double glazing through to raffle tickets for the local church through to sponsorships for charity runs, I was astonished the other day to hear the man ask me if I had any old mobile phones lying around so that I could donate to charity. It turns out that for every mobile phone handset that they get given, the charity receives just £1 for the phone, surely these phones are worth more then that? So I set about find out the ‘true worth’ of my old mobile phones.

I then researched some more about mobile phone recycling and i came across a great site that helped me to learn more about the process as well as what happens with the phone when i recycle them. I am happy and will not donate any more to charity as I could have got £37 for the one i did! Since I found out this I’ve been hunting down my old mobiles and sending them into Fonebank as they seem to give the most for the old phones I have when i searched on recyclemobilephones.co.uk. They also have a TV commercial, which is very good.

On some of my phones I had some sensitive data but after emailing FoneBank they sent me instructions through about how I could remove all my personal information from the phones before I sent them in, which made me feel much better and is a testament to how good Fone bank really are. The reviews I have read also seen positive, has anyone else ever used a program to recycle their old mobile phones?

All touchscreen phones are likely to look pretty much the same to be truthful. What distinguishes the Nokia 5800 is its sleekness: it’s much narrower than the iPhone 3G, in fact with a width of 52mm; it’s probably the narrowest touchscreen phone around. The device has a wide range of input options: finger touch, stylus and plectrum with a virtual alphanumeric keypad, full and mini QWERTY keyboards and handwriting recognition. The display will rotate automatically when you turn the phone to landscape mode.

Normally the XpressMusic phones have dedicated buttons for music, and the Nokia 5800 has a dedicated virtual media bar for quick access to music controls, as well as functions like the gallery and web browser. The big question is: “Is the touchscreen on the 5800 as good as the iPhone?” A front-mounted video camera enables you to make video calls on a 3G network.

The phone is supplied with an 8GB memory card, which can store up to 2,000 MP3 tracks (or 4,000 in AAC format), and if your music collection grows even bigger, you can upgrade this to a massive 16GB. The optional Comes with Music feature gives you unlimited music downloads for a whole year! There’s also a built-in FM radio. No complaints for music then.

The 5800’s big touchscreen is ideal for web browsing. The Nokia 5800 beats the iPhone here too, with support for Flash meaning that you can watch videos from YouTube and other sites on your phone. The phone is also WiFi compatible, so you can get super fast data transfer speeds in the vicinity of a WLAN network or a WiFi Hotspot.

You get a couple of games and the standard Series 60 organiser applications with the phone, including document browsers and a good organiser.

The Nokia 5800 shares design characteristics with the iPhone and Samsung touch-screen handsets like the Omnia. The candy bar shape offers clean lines with rounded corners and a black and burgundy color scheme (there’s also a thin red stripe). At 4.37 inches tall by 2.04 inches wide by 0.61 inch deep, it is relatively small as touch-screen phones go, though it is a bit thicker than average. On the home screen there are icons for the phone book and the phone dialer. The phone dialer has large virtual buttons with larger numbers, yet the phone dialer does not show the corresponding letters on each numeric key. Yes, we realize the phone has a full keyboard for dialing, but you’ll still need the letters to dial some phone numbers (like 1-866-402-CNET) and when spelling a person’s name in an automated phone directory. The Nokia 5800 offers several ways to type messages. The full QWERTY keyboard takes full advantage of the Nokia 5800’s display. You can scroll through text you’ve already written by tapping the chosen area on the display.

LG KP500 Cookie cell phone is not only feature filled but it is good looking as well and offers users a fashionable and stylish handset with fun and entertaining features. I truly like the phone and think it’ll do very well in the mobile phone market.

The LG KP500 Cookie cell phone is operational with a 3.2 mega pixel camera, media player and a whole host of other features which you can enjoy. The phone’s 3 inch touch screen display is easy to use and the phone comes with a stylus so you shouldn’t have any difficulty accessing any of the features. The phone is also equipped with 4 built in games and you can download more at your will so you’ll really get a good range of entertainment features from this phone.

The LG KP500 Cookie cell phone’s features are great fun and easy to use and the phone also has handwriting recognition which is a fun and useful feature. Touch screen phones are the big thing this year so LG have rightly created a lot of phones which are controlled using a large touch screen display and this phone is one of them. Personally, I think the phone is best suited to entertainment use.

Demand for mobile phones with touch-sensitive screens has increased a lot during the last year and all kinds of models appeared on the market. LG is trying to reach exactly this group of users with its budget model, which has been given the nice and ‘tasty’ name Cookie, also known as LG KP500 Cookie cell phone. According to the company, it offers features inherent in the high-end models, but at an affordable price. If you’ve seen the 8-megapixel LG Renoir you can find some similarities in the appearance, but Cookie is not as shiny and looks much more unpretentious. The phone is made of plastic, which feels like rubber and creates a pleasant sensation in your hand. The large 3-inch TFT display has a resolution of 240×400 pixels, 262k colors, which, just as many screens with such features, ensures a good image at artificial light. The manufacturer boasts that the touchscreen uses the latest technology, which improves sensitivity. Furthermore, there is an option to play different sounds and vibrations when pressing the screen, which contributes to the tangibility.

While you open the Sony Ericsson Z310a, you will find a slightly small 65k color TFT display with 128 x 160 pixel resolution. The Z310a features Sony Ericsson’s Light Effects, which use a ring of lights along the boundary of the phone around the keypad. The effects are user-configurable to any of a dizzying array of colors and patterns, and can be assigned to not only general phone notifications, but also to individual callers. I very loved this feature and wish that more handset manufacturers would integrate light notifications in their handsets.

The Z310a is Sony Ericsson’s newest entry-level offering for AT&T’s lineup. While light on features, the Z310a is fashionable and offers solid build quality, which should help it stand up to a little of abuse extra time. The Sony Ericsson Z310a is a small flip phone for the entry-level crowd. Though somewhat thick at 25.4mm (1″), this fashionable handset is smooth, and fits nicely in your hand. The phone weighs 91g (3.2oz) and is nicely weighted so that it feels solidly built, and not too light. The keypad of the Z310a is well lit with bright blue lights. Like most Sony Ericsson models, the Z310a lacks dedicated end/send buttons, instead using a ‘back’ button and the softkeys when in a phone call. There is also a multi-tasking/shortcut button on the bottom right of the keypad, which I found to be incredibly useful. The front of the handset features a VGA camera for snapping pictures, although it unfortunately lacks both a built-in flash and a portrait mirror. Below the camera lens is a smooth glossy area that hides the external monochrome 96 x 64 pixel resolution display. When active, the external display is visible and will show you the time, as well as scrolling information such as caller’s name.

If you like phones that uses skins you’ll like to know the Z310a has customizable themes enabled. The gaming system included in the Sony Ericsson Z310a is based on J2ME, having cool games to distract yourself! Not surprisingly, since it is now standard in all phones, the Z310a supports both SMS and EMS. Additionally it has MMS messaging to send all multimedia files! The text prediction tool exploits the T9 technology, which is renowned as a good tool.

This mobile phone uses the GPRS (Class 10) / EDGE technology. The Z310a goes with an infrared port for wireless communication. Connection to a computer is possible with a cable to transfer ringtones, wallpapers, etc. We conclude believing the Sony Ericsson Z310a to be a very attractive companion mobile phone and we would recommend it to our readers!
